Winners of Atlanta
Troy held Georgia State to 35.3 percent from the field, 18.8 percent from deep and outscored the Panthers 40-20 in the paint for the 65-53 victory on Thursday.
The Panthers held the momentum at the 6:46 mark of the second after a 7-0 run that ended with two makes from Brenden Tucker from the charity stripe, 44-38.
A miss by Aamer Muhammad led to Zay Williams grabbing the offensive rebound and dishing it back to the 6-1 guard, who drew the foul. After nailing both at the free throw line, the momentum shifted as Troy launched a 17-1 run that lasted until the 14:44 mark, 55-45.
After GSU trimmed the deficit back to four, 57-53, with an 8-2 run, Darius McNeill ended up with the ball in his hands. The UTSA transfer drove to the paint and found Kieffer Punter open on the wing. Punter, with a hand in his face, hit a dagger from deep that would secure Troy's fourth straight victory.
Let's Go for a Hike
The Mountaineers enter Saturday following a heartbreak to the hands of Georgia Southern, 67-65, on a buzzer-beater that saw a two-game win streak end at home.
Holmes Convocation Center hasn't been ideal for home-court advantage, with App State sitting on a 6-4 record in the friendly confines after losses to Campbell, Kennesaw State, Furman and Georgia Southern. However, three of the Mountaineers' victories came after scoring in triple-figures.
Tyree Boykin (11.9) and Donovan Gregory (11.8) lead the Mountaineers in the scoring column as the two players in double-digits. Since SBC play started, Boykin's numbers have risen to 15 points per game (10th in SBC) as the leading 3-point threat in the conference on 3.2 makes per game through five games.
App State has suffered defensively, allowing the highest opponent field goal percentage in the SBC at 44.2 percent. This is a complete change from the team's non-conference schedule, where the Mountaineers led the conference at 40 percent. The deep ball is where App State thrives, with the fifth-best 3-point percentage in the SBC at 33.2 percent on the third-most 3-pointers per game at eight.
Peak Statistics
• The shot-blocking for Williams has been off the charts, with seven blocks in the last three games compared to 11 in the previous 15.
• For the fourth game of the season, Punter led the Trojans in scoring with 16 points after not being atop the leaderboard once last season.
• McNeill comes off a "stat-sheet stuffer" type of game with his 48th career double-digit game, 37th game with 2-plus steals and 29th game with 3-plus assists.
• With nine turnovers in the win over Georgia State, the Trojans limited themselves to under 10 for the first time since Mercer on Dec. 21, 2022, and the fourth time in 2022-23.
• The Trojans were nuisances on the defensive end, forcing 20 GSU turnovers on 12 steals and four blocks – first time the team forced 20-plus turnovers since SUNO (33) on Nov. 23, 2022.
• Troy looks for its fifth straight win over App State on Saturday. The last four matchups saw the Trojans win by an average margin of victory of plus-11.75.
