Carlton Martial Named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week

TROY, Ala. – There are setting records, and then there are setting records in style; Carlton Martial took the later route Saturday with 18 tackles in Troy's victory over Marshall when he needed just three to become the Sun Belt Conference's all-time leader in career tackles. The league honored him as the Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Martial led a Troy defense that dominated the Thundering Herd from start to finish in a 16-7 Trojan victory. Troy held Marshall to 174 yards of total offense and 96 rushing yards; the Herd entered the weekend ranked sixth nationally, averaging 263.3 yards per game on the ground and 15th overall with 507.7 yards per game. Marshall's only score of the game came thanks a 16-yard field following a Troy turnover.
With 475 career tackles, Martial stands alone at the top of the Sun Belt leaderboard and is just 71 tackles shy of becoming the all-time FBS leader. The senior from Mobile, Ala., enters the weekend ranked 13th in FBS history.
Martial's 18 tackles against Marshall rank as the second most in a game nationally this season and the sixth most in a game in Troy history.
Troy travels to Western Kentucky this weekend for the Trojans' final non-conference road game of the season. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
