TROY, Ala. – Playing in front of the home fans for the first time all season, Troy volleyball earned their first sweep of the season over Alabama State after winning 25-18, 25-18, 25-21 Thursday night to open the Trojan Invitational from Trojan Arena.
"It was great to be home and get a sweep," head coach Josh Lauer said. "I was proud of our fight, and we are looking forward to a great weekend ahead. I think we need to play more focused and tougher tomorrow, but I'm proud of the team tonight.
The win marks the Trojans (5-5) 35th straight time beating Alabama State, as they have yet to lose a match to their foes from the state capital.
Leading Troy once again was Tori Hester, who recorded a match-high 13 kills on a .357 hitting percentage. Amara Anderson nearly recorded her third double-double after putting up 29 assists and nine digs. Getting her second consecutive start, freshman Jaci Mesa led the defense with 10 digs.
Alabama State (1-12) saw Kaysia Bates finish the match with 10 kills, while Maya McCord led the match with 22 digs. Two hornets, Emily Brooks and Brooke Adams, each finished with double-digit assists. While the hornets out blocked Troy eight to five, they hit .127 as a team.
Set One: After a relatively close start to set one, the Trojans were able to pull away after a seven-point swing gave Troy a comfortable lead. The hornets never got back within five after a Julia Brooks kill. A service ace from Sara Bates Troy went up nine, and Savannah Poling finished the set off with her first kill of the match.
Set Two: A .367 hitting percentage was the highest connection rate among the three sets for Troy. The Hornets got off to a 2-0 lead, but four straight points from Troy with kills from Halston Hillier and Brooks was the last lead they saw. Amiah Butler and Poling answered the call when needed as they gave Troy three straight points late in the set. Taking advantage of Alabama State's attacking errors, a Mesa ace gave Troy a two-set advantage.
Set Three: The visitors stuck around in the third set, however. A back-and-forth affair saw the set tied 19-19 as the Hornets looked to extend the match. Errors doomed Alabama State as four came after the 20th point giving them 11 total in the set before Hester, as she has done all year, finished the match with a kill.
Up Next: The Trojan Invitational continues tomorrow, September 16, at 6 p.m., when Troy will match up against Gardner-Webb from Trojan Arena.
