JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Despite an early lead on a header from Jordan Stack, the Troy women's soccer team faltered against in-state foe, Jacksonville State, 3-2 at the JSU Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.
The Trojans (2-3-1) have their three-match unbeaten streak snapped, losing to JSU (2-6-0) for the first time since 2013.
Stack and Erin Bloomfield put Troy on the board in the high-scoring contest as the Trojans accumulated 18 shots and eight shots on goal.
Vanessa Mejia wouldn't be denied for the Gamecocks, netting two goals in the game, which included the game-winning goal at the 73:48 mark.
Forgetful Three Minutes
The Trojans entered the JSU Complex on fire offensively. Just 14 minutes into the ballgame, Lisa Blankestein found herself with the ball. She took one step forward and launched a pass towards the left goalpost. Stack met the pass in the air, heading in her second goal of the season, 1-0.
JSU quickly responded with a dominant three minutes off multiple corner kicks. First, it was Majia off the corner kick from Allessandra Romano to put the Gamecocks on the board, 1-1, at the 20:04 mark. Then, three minutes later, at 22:57, Camryn Davis gave JSU the lead, 2-1, at the top left of the goal.
Both sides stayed silent over the next 50 minutes as they issued attacks with no result. Mejia ended the silence 73:48 in the game, throttling in her second goal of the game and season to push JSU up 3-1.
Troy didn't give up as Bloomfield had a late penalty kick chance after Bailey Dean received a yellow card. The 5-11 sophomore easily found the back of the net, nailing the left side to put Troy back into the game, 3-2, with five minutes left. Despite two more opportunities by Stack and Ashley Rainho, the Trojans fell, 3-2, for the first time since Aug. 22.
Coach's Quote
"Disappointed in the result today. I thought we lacked overall quality in our decision-making and technical abilities for large portions of that match. We showed some decent effort with the number of chances we created and gave ourselves an opportunity to earn a result up until the last minute, but we just weren't clinical enough in the final third. We'll turn our attention towards a response against Georgia Southern and starting SBC play on a positive note."
By The Numbers
• Troy dominated on the offensive end, creating multiple opportunities to lead the shot category, 18-11, and shots-on-goal, 8-5.
• Stack netted her second goal of the season and let out a team-high six shots, which marks a career-high for the junior.
• Troy spent much of the game on their offensive end, accumulating 70.2 minutes or 78 percent of the game on its end.
• Both teams were extremely physical, with each side given two yellow cards and a combined 11 fouls.
Conference Opener
After another week-long break, Troy returns home to the Troy Soccer Complex next Sunday at 1 p.m. with a date against Georgia Southern for the conference opener.
