Troy Football Breakdown – Cornerbacks
8/28/2022 6:03:00 PM | Football
Undervalued by outsiders, Troy's cornerbacks, led by Reddy Steward, helped lead Troy to become one of the nation's top takeaway teams last season.
They Said It – Assistant Coach Travis Pearson
"I thought they competed well in fall camp and grew in the system. I thought Reddy Steward, Caleb Ransaw and O'shai Fletcher stood out in the group where we're going to be good with depth. I look forward to those guys competing and running through the system."
Players to Watch
Reddy Steward has demonstrated over the past two seasons that he is an elite-level player at the position. Troy's top-rated cornerback each of the past two seasons, Steward ranked second nationally (min. 25 targets), holding opponents to a 28.6 reception percentage (8-of-28) last season.
With Steward holding on to one of the two starting spots, O'shai Fletcher, Caleb Ransaw, Elijah Culp, Zion Williams and Kyle Cass are all in the mix for the other starting role and key playing time. Fletcher, Culp and Williams have combined for 29 starts in their careers, Ransaw was Troy's starter in dime packages last year and Cass transferred in during fall camp from Mississippi State.
"Reddy is one of the most undervalued players in the country," Pearson said. "The one factor that stands out with him is that he's a great processor of information. He's a workaholic, he's a film rat, and I think he understands how to take all of that to the field and incorporate it into his game. Reddy's a quiet assassin; he doesn't say much but understands his tools."
Position Notes
• In 2021, Reddy Steward finished the year with an NFL Passer Rating Against of 24.7, the fifth-best in the country among cornerbacks with at least 200 coverage snaps.
• Last season, Elijah Culp limited opponents to just 3.6 yards after the catch; remove one 42-yard reception, that number drops to 1.8 yards after the catch.
• Troy ranked eighth nationally with 16 interceptions and fifth with 1.33 interceptions per game last season.
Parting Shot
"Our strength is in our coverage skills and instincts," Pearson said. "I think they do a good job of studying and understanding the scheme within the system. When the ball is in the air, they play well. They play fast, have great instincts and understand the system we play, knowing where to be and how to make plays.
