Troy Drops Season Opener to Georgia

ATHENS, Ga.-Â Troy dropped its 2022 season opener Friday night against Georgia 3-0 (19-25, 18-25, 17-25). Despite 11 ties and five lead changes in the first set, the Trojans could not find their footing in the match.Â
"We battled tonight but had a difficult time being consistent," head coach Josh Lauer said. "The tempo of Georgia's offense put a lot of pressure on us, but this is what the non-conference schedule is all about. We were challenged and learned a lot tonight that is absolutely going to help us mature and develop as a team."
Â
Julia Brooks led the Trojan attack finishing with a team-high seven kills, two blocks, and a .385 hitting percentage. However, it was a rough night getting a connection for the Trojans as the team finished with a -.013 hitting percentage.Â
Â
Setter Amara Anderson finished with 21 assists, and Caroline Darracott finished with seven digs. Despite Georgia making 13 service errors compared to the Trojan's eight, the hosts out blocked Troy 15 to two and had six aces compared to the Trojan's two.Â
Â
Set 1: Both teams went back and forth as no more than one point separated the two sides until Amiah Butler got her first collegiate kill to give Troy a 12-10 lead. Butler would finish with three kills in two sets played. Unfortunately for the Trojans, they couldn't shake the Bulldogs, as Georgia would close out the set on an 11-4 run.Â
Â
Set 2: Like the first set, Troy could only connect for eight kills. Tori Hester served up the Trojan's first ace of the season, but it wasn't enough as Georgia went on another big run, outscoring Troy 6-1 in the middle of the set, causing Troy to call a timeout. The deficit was too significant to overcome as Troy never saw a lead in the set giving Georgia the two-set advantage.Â
Â
Set 3: Troy saw little separation, and the Bulldogs capitalized on the Trojan's nine errors, the most of the three sets. Troy showed fight, however, as they rallied for four straight points after being down six to get back within two but could not get over the hump to extend the match.Â
Â
Up Next: The Trojans will continue their participation in the Classic City Clash tomorrow, August 27, with a doubleheader beginning at noon against Santa Clara, followed by a match-up with Chattanooga at 4:30 from Athens.Â
