Â
TROY, Ala. – Troy linebacker Carlton Martial and bandit Richard Jibunor were among the players selected to the Reese's Senior Bowl Watch List, released Wednesday morning by the premier postseason all-star game.
Â
Martial enters his final year of eligibility with the Trojans on the verge of becoming the all-time leading tackler at the FBS level in NCAA history, while Jibunor enters 2022 with two years of eligibility left following a breakout 2021 campaign.Â
Â
Martial, a senior from Mobile, Ala., which serves as the home for the Senior Bowl, enters the 2022 season needing just 104 tackles to break Northwestern's Tim McGarigle career FBS record of 545 tackles. Martial beings the season with 442 tackles and has averaged 122 tackles each of the last three seasons.
Â
Coming off a season in which he was a finalist for the Burlsworth Trophy (top player who began his career as a walk-on), Martial is one of just two players at the FBS level since 2000 to record more than 425 tackles, 45 tackles for loss and five interceptions in their career – he has 442 tackles, 47 tackles for loss and five interceptions.
Â
Martial is the nation's leading tackler since the start of the 2018 season, 66 more than the next closest player. In addition to the FBS tackle record, Martial is also within distance of the Troy tackles for loss (19), Sun Belt tackles (18), FBS assisted tackles (49) and Troy tackles (128) records for his career.
Â
Jibunor, a Delta State, Nigeria, native, finished 2021 as the only player in the country with at least eight sacks, 10 tackles for loss and two interceptions. A two-time All-Sun Belt pick, Jibunor finished the season with 41 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, eight sacks, two interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He became just the fourth player in Sun Belt history to reach eight sacks in the first seven games of the season.Â
Â
He recorded a tackle for loss in seven games, including a streak of five straight contests – he had a sack in all five of those games. In addition, Jibunor averaged a pressure every 4.97 pass rushing snaps, which ranked fifth nationally among players with at least 150 pass rush snaps.
Â
Troy opens its season on Sept. 3 at No. 21 Ole Miss. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m., and SEC Network has the television broadcast of the game.
