TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's tennis program signed two premiere foreign prospects, Maria Guirguis and Valeriia Avdeeva, to complete its recruiting class of 2022, head coach Rawia Elsisi announced Thursday afternoon.
"We are very thrilled to welcome both Maria and Valeriia to our Troy tennis family and happy they have chosen to become a Troy Trojan," Elsisi said.
Maria Guirguis | Alexandria, Egypt | International Liberty School
A National Egyptian Junior team member, Guirguis was ranked as high as No. 1 in the country and No. 158 globally in juniors. Guirguis rose to the top with multiple tournament victories in the J4 and J5 grades. The International Liberty School graduate has nine finals appearances with three trophies to boost.
Two tournament victories came in the J4 singles competition at Nairobi, Kenya, where she defeated Mialy Ranaivo (2-6, 7-5, 7-5) and Narindra Corrine Ranaivo (5-7, 7-6, 6-4) from Madagascar in their respective head-to-head matches. Guirguis partnered with Sara Bejlek (Czech Republic) in doubles competition to claim her third J4 victory in the Cairo finals, 6-4, 6-2.
"Maria is a highly experienced tennis player from Egypt," Elsisi said. "She was ranked No. 1 in Egypt and represented the National Egyptian Junior team. She has a very successful ITF career and was No. 158 in ITF world juniors' rankings and No. 700 for ITF women. She is very committed to improvement and will make an immediate impact within the team."
Valeriia Avdeeva | Saint Petersburg, Russia | The British School of Barcelona
Avdeeva ranks in the top 650 nationally in juniors, rising as high as 647 in January 2022. Standing 5-8, Avdeeva has two J5 doubles semi-final appearances and six J3 and J5 quarterfinals appearances. Her deepest run came at the J3 El Prat de Llobregat when she defeated Aya Elmarrase from Spain (6-4, 7-5) in the first round and Isabella Lechuga Franco from Mexico (6-4, 6-2) in the second.
The oldest of 10, Avdeeva is a multi-sport athlete in swimming and track & field, winning multiple medals in both sports while living in Spain.
"Valeriia is a very talented and hardworking tennis player from Russia," Elsisi said. "She has a successful junior career and ranked in the top 650 ITF with lots of potential. She is highly motivated and comes from a big family. I cannot wait for her to be part of our team and compete for Troy."
