MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Behind Rigsby Mosley's career game and two runs in the top of the ninth inning, the Trojans knocked off the No. 3 seed Coastal Carolina 6-4 in Friday morning's quarterfinal matchup from Riverwalk Stadium.
Troy (32-23) will now play the winner of Georgia Southern, Appalachian State, on Saturday, May 28, at 3 p.m. This is the first semi-final appearance since 2018. Trojan fans are invited to a semi-final social before the first pitch in the Club Car Bar. Appetizers will be served with beverages available for purchase.
In a 4-4 game, in the top of the ninth, three straight singles with two outs gave the Trojans a 6-4 lead that they would hold onto to advance. A leadoff walk to Donovan Whibbs started it all as Brandon Schrepf, Jesse Hall, and Kyle Mock followed with hits to give Troy their second two-run advantage of the afternoon.
Coastal Carolina (36-18-1) got the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but senior Marquez Oates produced a ground ball in which Troy turned a perfect 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
As he's been doing all season, Hall had another big day as he finished the game with three hits and two RBIs. Clay Stearns's fifth home run of the season gave him two runs batted in, with Schrepf and Mock each driving in a run on two hits.
Sixth-year senior Rigsby Mosley had a spectacular performance on the mound going a career-high 7.1 innings and throwing 121 pitches. He had given up two runs through the first six innings after only allowing two base runners heading into the seventh. He finished allowing four runs on five hits with seven strikeouts.
Grayson Stewart (5-5) came on in relief with one out and runners on first and second. Stewart got a strikeout, but a walk to load the bases was followed with a two-out double, scoring two runs to tie the game at 4-4. Stewart picked up his second strikeout of the game to strand any more damage and send it to the ninth.
Chanticleer starter Michael Knorr had a strong outing himself as he tied his career-high in strikeouts with 11 in 6.2 innings pitched. Trojans did, however, tally four runs on six hits. The loss is given to Reece Maniscalco (2-2), who in 1.2 innings of work allowed the Trojans to reclaim the lead.
A two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning got the Chanticleers on the board first, but Stearns followed in the top of the second with a two-run home run of his own to tie the ball game at 2-2.
Coastal Carolina threatened to regain the lead in the bottom half of the second, putting runners on the corners before Mosley got the final out via a strikeout to keep the game all knotted up.
Both starting pitchers settled in and found their groove seeing scoreless innings in both the third and the fourth innings as Knorr struck out the side in the fifth on a total of 10 pitches, and Mosley retired eight straight before giving up the first walk of the afternoon.
Troy broke the deadlock at the top of the seventh again, capitalizing with two outs. Two quick infield popups followed a leadoff walk. But just as they did in the ninth, three straight singles got the Trojans two more runs home to take the lead.
This is the first win over Coastal Carolina this season as the Trojans got their revenge on the Chanticleers for the sweep just two weeks ago.
