Troy (21-12, 8-6) came away victorious in game one, winning 10-8, and the Jaguars (22-12, 9-6) took the nightcap after beating the Trojans in extra innings 11-6.
Controversy struck late in the 10th inning of the second game as South Alabama was able to take the lead with a bases-loaded walk brought in the go-ahead run. With a 3-2 count, what looked to be a strike was called a ball, giving the Jaguars the lead.
Troy had a chance to walk it off with runners at first and third and one out in the bottom of the ninth, but a pop-out bunt was caught, and with the runner breaking to home, he was easily doubled off to send the game into extra innings.
Jesse Hall, Kyle Mock, Clay Stearns, William Sullivan, and Donovan Whibbs all had a productive day. Hall had three runs batted in on six hits between the two games and scored three times. Mock finished with three RBIs with Leonard, Sullivan, Stearns, and Whibbs, each bringing in two runs.
Game One: In a one-run ball game, Troy used a seven-run, eight-hit fifth inning to power past South Alabama 10-2.
Troy bats had a much different approach in game two after not managing much offensively in game one of the series.
Sullivan launched a two-run home run down the left-field line to start the Trojan surge giving Troy their first lead of the day. However, that lead would last the rest of the way as Troy followed with a Mock and Caleb Bartolero double, scoring two more runs.
Two more home runs from Leonard and Stearns broke open the ball game and was capped off by a Hall single to bring in the 10th run for Troy.
Garrett Gainous (5-2) had another stellar outing on the bump; the reigning Sun Belt pitcher of the week finished the afternoon with the win going six innings, only giving up two runs on four hits with six strikeouts.
After giving up the second Trojan run, Gainous settled in and retired the next 11 batters in order.
For South Alabama, Jojo Booker (3-1) earns the loss as he gave up nine runs on 10 hits in 4.2 innings.
South Alabama took advantage of lead-off walks in the first and second inning as both came around to score after timely hitting with two outs by the Jaguars.
Mock got Troy on the board first as he did last night after a Hall single, and a Sullivan double put runners on second and third with Mock hitting a sharp ground ball to second, quickly scoring Hall from third.
Logan Ross, Keaton Fuller, and Marquez Oates followed Gainous in relief. Fuller worked around a bases-loaded jam with nobody out to strike out the side in the top of the eighth, proving crucial for Troy.
In the end, South Alabama made things interesting as they plated five runs, making it 10-8, but Grayson Stewart came in and got the final out for his third save of the season, allowing Troy to even the series.
Game Two: Much like the first game of the day, Mock got the Trojans on the board first with a single after back-to-back walks to Hall and Sullivan. Sun Belt Player of the week Easton Kirk made it 2-0 with his 24th RBI of the season.
South Alabama wasn't behind for long as more walks came around to score for the Jaguars when a Diego Altamirano single evened up the game at 2-2.
The score stayed that way until the top of the fifth inning when Kasey Donaldson stepped up to bat as a pinch hitter and gave Jaguar the lead with a three-run home run to untie the game.
Another run was added to make it 6-2 in favor of South, but a Stearns triple and a Whibbs infield single cut the deficit in half, but that would be all that came from the inning.
That's where the score remained until the bottom sixth when Troy came storming back for three runs to tie the game as it was Whibbs once again singling through the right side, bringing in a run for his 21st RBI of the season. Then, with two runners on and two outs, Hall drove in two runs after smacking a double to the left-field corner to even the game at six all.
Trojans looked to take the lead late with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth but could not plate any runs, keeping things even heading into the ninth.
Kyle Gamble (0-3) picks up the loss. Gamble threw 96 pitches in 4.2 innings of work following Brady Fuller, who got the start and went five innings, allowing six runs on seven hits and five walks.
Eric Lin (2-0) gets his second win of the season, pitching the final 4.1 innings holding Troy to no runs on four hits and walking five batters.
Up Next: The Trojans won't return to action until April 22 as they travel to Jonesboro, Ark., To take on the Arkansas State Red Wolves.
