TROY, Ala. – Both Garrett Gainous and Easton Kirk took home Sun Belt weekly awards for their dominating performances over the weekend. Gainous earns his second pitcher of the week honor, while Kirk receives his first Sun Belt player of the week award.
"Garrett was lights out with his command and was incredibly efficient with his pitches the other night," head coach Skylar Meade said. "I am really proud of his focus all Friday night. Kirk had great at-bats all week, and truly he has all year. He grinds and has a tremendous focus on all things he has done this season. I am thrilled that they were both rewarded with recognition from the league."
Gainous, who won the award three weeks ago, earns it this week for his masterful work against ULM and for helping guide Troy to a series-opening victory. Gainous fanned a new career-high 12 batters in a season-high seven innings while allowing not a single Warhawk base runner to reach base via a walk. On 101 pitches, Gainous gave up two hits holding ULM batters to a .87 batting average en route to his fourth win of the season.
With the honor, Gainous became the first Sun Belt pitcher this season to win the award twice.
Kirk swung a hot bat all week, going 8-15 (.533) with two home runs over the last four games. The Piedmont, Ala. native recorded eight hits and four RBIs against ULM over the weekend, getting on base at a .632 clip and recording a team-high six runs scored.
Kirk's 11th inning single broke an 8-8 deadlock in the series finale against ULM, and he would eventually come around to score the winning run to give Troy their second Sun Belt series sweep.
