TROY, Ala. – One of the best to ever wear the Troy uniform, Fátima Fernández Cano, continues to shine in her professional career after capturing the Carlisle Arizona Women's Golf Classic over the weekend on the Epson Tour.
Â
Cano fired a 17-under to win the event by three strokes, her second career win on the tour, which included an 11-under 61 in the event's third round; Cano shot under-par in all four rounds.
Â
"It's super sweet," Cano told EpsonTour.com. "I came into this tournament as a preparation to continue my LPGA career. We had a long break, and it just felt right; I always love Arizona and Carlisle puts on a first-class event."Â
Â
Cano became the first Troy golfer to earn her LPGA Tour Card this past fall after finishing second on the then Symetra Tour (which has since been renamed the Epson Tour). It was Cano's second straight year finishing as a Symetra Tour graduate; however, COVID-19 affected the number of players selected to receive their LPGA Card. She finished the 2021 season with three runner-up cards and 10 top-10 finishes in 20 total events.
Â
"I was very close a few times last year. I was able to get my LPGA card but never quite got that win," Cano said. "To come out here, first event and getting it done is actually very sweet."Â
Â
Cano, who won the Sun Belt individual championship as a freshman, played in an NCAA Regional all four of her seasons with the Trojans, three on Sun Belt champion squads and another as an at-large selection. She is second on Troy's career stroke average list (73.89) and is responsible for three of the four lowest single-season stroke averages in school history.
