TROY, Ala. – Troy assistant coach Courtney Simmons was named to the Advancement of Blacks in Sports 2022 Women's Basketball Assistant Coaches Watchlist, the ABIS announced Tuesday.
Simmons is in her ninth season at Troy as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. In her tenure, Simmons has helped guide the Trojans to five Sun Belt Championships and six post season berths including three NCAA Tournament appearances.
"Though there are many great candidates on this watch list, I cannot think of any coach more deserving than Coach Courtney Simmons," head coach Chanda Rigby said. "She deserves so much credit for what we have been blessed to build within Troy's Women's Basketball program. Coach C is a tireless worker who possesses a unique skill set that is invaluable in our business and is conducive to building championship programs."
The Baton, Rouge, La., native, who works primarily with the guards, has been a vital part in creating a championship culture within the Troy Women's Basketball program.
During her time at Troy, Simmons has helped lead the Trojans to three Sun Belt Tournament Championships ('16,'17, '21) as well as a pair of Sun Belt Regular Season Championships ('20, '22) while also earning trips to three NCAA Tournaments, the WNIT and WBI postseason tournaments.
"I am thankful and completely overwhelmed by this incredible honor," Simmons said. "This is all possible because of the great people that surround me. I send my sincerest gratitude to the ABIS Committee."
Simmons was instrumental in the development of guards Ashley Beverly Kelley, who was a three-time All-Sun Belt Performer (2013-16) and a back-to-back first team honoree (2014-16) and Joanna Harden, who was a first-team All-Sun Belt performer (2013-14).
Most recently she helped develop Jasmine Robinson into an all-conference performer, a Sun Belt All-Tournament Team honoree and the 25th member of the 1,000-point club.
Simmons was one of four mid-major assistant coaches to be honored alongside Chelsea Lyles (FGCU), Darrell Moseley (Delaware), Pierre Curtis (Furman) and Yolisha Jackson (South Florida), and was the only Sun Belt assistant to be honored.
