TROY, Ala. -Â Kenneth Mangrum has been promoted to Troy men's basketball associate head coach, head coach Scott Cross announced Monday. Mangrum, who is in his third year with the program, carried the assistant coach title prior to today's announcement.
Â
In his three years, Mangrum has worked primarily with Troy's post players and is a force on the recruiting trail. He recently aided in recruiting Efe Odigie (UTEP) and Rifen Miguel (Ohio) from the transfer portal while helping lead Troy to its best recruiting class in program history in 2020 with Troy's first four-star recruit.
Â
"Coach Mangrum has been a part of my staff for seven years and has been a huge part of our success at my previous institution and now here at Troy," Cross said. "He is extremely loyal and a very hard worker. He is a great role model for our student-athletes and does a great job building relationships with the players, families and coaches throughout the recruiting process.Â
Â
"The title of associate head coach has been long overdue, but I wanted to make sure that the timing was right, and I could not think of a better time to do it than after three tough wins," Cross said. "Coach Mangrum shares the same values and thoughts about the culture and the types of players that we want here at Troy University. I know that when I am not around, the program is always in good hands with Coach Mangrum and the rest of my awesome, hard-working staff."
Â
The Mangrum-Cross duo led UT Arlington to a 27-9 mark, the best record in program history, and a quarterfinal appearance in the NIT in 2015-16. The Mavericks amassed an 88-58 record in his four-year tenure, including two postseason appearances.Â
Â
"I'm excited for the opportunity of advancement," Mangrum said. "It's always what you want for your hard work to get noticed. I've been doing this for a long time, and I appreciate the opportunity that coach has given me. The goal is and always will be to win a championship. The title doesn't matter because the goal stays the same."
Â
The gap between UTA and Troy was filled at Texas Southern, where Mangrum coached Jeremy Combs in 2018-19. Combs would become the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Player and Newcomer of the Year under Mangrum's guidance.
