TROY, Ala. β With a trio of Trojans recording a game-high 12 points, Troy dominated rival South Alabama, 84-52, Saturday night at Trojan Arena.
Β
A career-high 12 points from Ja'Mia Hollings, all of which were scored in the fourth quarter, paced the way for Troy (17-7, 8-2 Sun Belt). Jasmine Robinson and Tina Stephens also joined Hollings with 12 points.
Β
For South Alabama (8-12, 2-5 Sun Belt), Nadia Howard was the only Jaguar to finish the game in double figures after tallying 10 points.
Β
How It Happened
The Trojans were unstoppable across all areas of the court to kickstart the contest. Felmas Koranga and Stephens combined for eight points through the first minute and a half of the contest, igniting the 30-point quarter. Troy's defense held South Alabama to just four points through the opening 10 minutes.
However, the Jaguars fought in the second quarter, outscoring Troy 18-13. After a jumper from Stephens at the 6:06 mark, South Alabama went on an 8-0 run to bring the game back within a more reasonable 16-point deficit, but back-to-back makes from Robinson and Brianna Harris to close the half gave the Trojans a comfortable 20-point lead, 44-22.
Β
The Trojans opened up an even kilter third quarter on a 6-0 run, capped off by a fastbreak jumper from Robinson with 6:24 to play. The Jaguars then responded with a 10-0 run of their own to cut Troy's 29-point advantage down to 19, 51-32. Β After trading baskets, Amber Leggett knocked down a pair from the charity stripe to give the Trojans a 59-35 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of action.
Β
The fourth quarter was all Troy. The squad saw its lead balloon to as many as 38 points. Of Troy's 25 points in the fourth, Hollings accounted for 12 of them. Hollings first points came with 8:04 to play after she knocked down a pair of free throws. Troy's largest lead of the game, 82-44, came off a layup from Sharonica Hartsfield with 2:37 to play, but the Jaguars would cut it back to 32, 84-52, before the final horn.
Β
Quotable β Head Coach Chanda Rigby
"It was a great night in Trojan Arena! I am the proudest of the way we started the game. We only allowed them four points in the first quarter, but it didn't end there. The people who came off the bench towards the end of the game really contributed and took their role seriously."
