Jacksonville, Fla – A late ninth-inning rally saw Troy score twice to bring the game within a run, but it wasn't enough, as the Trojans fall 6-5, Friday night from John Sessions Stadium.
After being down 6-3 heading into the top of the ninth, back-to-back walks to Caleb Bartolero and Clay Stearns, the Trojans looked to get back into the game.
A fielder's choice saw Bartolero go to third and Jesse Hall reach first. Seth Johnson stepped into the batter's box as a pinch hitter and ripped a single to bring Troy within two.
Donovan Whibbs would follow after working the count and pick up his second RBI of the night with a single of his own to see Troy only down one.
Jacksonville closer Tyler Vogel would limit the damage to only those two runs has he got Rigsby Mosley to strike out and a Colin Summerhill ground ball to end the game.
With the loss, the Trojans (4-2) saw their eight-game win streak against Jacksonville come to an end.
In his second start of the season, Garrett Gainous (0-1) would pick up his first loss of 2022 after going 3.1 innings, giving up five runs on seven hits, five strikeouts, and four walks.
Gainous had to work around some early traffic as the Dolphins struck right out the gates with a Christian Coipel double bringing in two runs. Mosley prevented a fourth run from being scored as he gunned down a runner at the plate for his second assist of the season to get the Trojans out of the inning.
Troy was quick to respond as William Sullivan led off the top of the second with a double which was immediately followed by a Caleb Bartolero RBI single to plate the Trojan's first run of the ball game.
Jacksonville got back to a three-run lead after a soft single up the middle by Jesus Pacheco, but Bartolero answered with his second RBI of the game with another two-out single to bring the score to 4-2.
After Gainous started to settle in on the mound, the Trojans continued to get it done with two outs as Whibbs picked up his sixth RBI of the season after ripping a ball down the right-field line, which bounced off first base and trickled into right field, which scored Leonard from second.
Kyle Gamble would come in for relief and be able to get out of a bases-loaded jam with a strikeout to limit the damage and keep the score 5-3. Gamble would match his career-high with six strikeouts after going 3.2 innings however would give up a run doubling the Dolphin's lead to 6-3.
After the third Trojan run, Jacksonville would retire 12 straight Troy batters until Cameron Gray would break it up with a single, but nothing would come of it.
Mason Adams (1-0) kept Troy off balance all night as he picked up the win for Jacksonville throwing 101 pitches in six innings of work, striking out 11 Troy batters and only allowing the three runs with no walks.
Up Next: Trojans will look to bounce back as they continue the series with Jacksonville tomorrow, Saturday, Feb 26, at 1 p.m. CT.
