TROY, Ala. – As the Trojans head for the break, the busy fall baseball schedule wraps up for head coach Skylar Meade and his squad as he looks to build off a successful first season at the helm of the Trojans.
In the eight weeks of fall work, the Trojans had a mix of individual and team practices, including intrasquad scrimmages and group work, fine-tuning the more minor positional details. Troy was able to get game action in as well with two fall games which saw Troy travel to Starkville, Miss., to compete with Mississippi State and host North West Florida State at Riddle-Pace Field.
"We used the fall to get into our culture, the system we have," Meade said. "Nothing is perfect, and we use this time to strive to improve things. Now on break, it goes to our team's internal leadership, in which we have a lot of great players that are leaders. They have to come together and be the most cohesive unit because I think tightly connected teams, like the one we have here, win close games."
One of those leaders is Caleb Bartolero; he enters his senior season with Troy and knows that it takes good leadership to be able to accomplish all the goals the Trojans have sent in front of them.
"I want to show everyone what it means to be a Troy Trojan," Bartolero said. "We are all bought in, and we go to work every day, put our heads down and do what is asked of us, and I think everything will take care of itself."
Joining Bartolero will be a few new faces to this year's Trojan team, as Meade wasn't afraid to attack the transfer portal as he brought in right-handed pitcher Zach fruit from Eastern Michigan, Tremayne Cobb Jr. from the University of Hartford, and Kole Myers from LSU Eunice JC, to name a few.
Transferring from the University of Hartford, Cobb has already settled into his new home here at Troy and knew he wanted to be a part was being built here.
"I wanted to come here to compete and better myself bringing my talent to the next level," Cobb said. "Since coming here, it's been easy to fit in and really be me, it's a competitive environment, and I think that competition helps us get better each day. So, ensuring we do everything the right way this fall has been our focus as we prepare for the spring."
The 32 wins last year were the most by a Trojan team since 2019. Under the pitching expertise of Meade, the Trojans led the Sun Belt Conference in strikeouts totaling 520. In addition, they led the conference in strikeouts per nine innings at 9.5, which was the most in program history, as Meade became the fourth coach in program history to win at least 30 games in his first season.
After a successful fall, Meade and the rest of Troy baseball will be eager to return to the diamond on January 11 as they resume team practices before kicking off the 2023 baseball season in February.
