11/22/2022 9:54:00 PM | Basketball (M)
TROY, Ala. – The night belonged to Nelson Phillips as he tied the NCAA record of 13 steals in a game to collect the 118-61 victory for Troy over Southern New-Orleans on Tuesday night in Trojan Arena.
With the 118-point performance, the Trojans continue their best start since the 2002-03 season at 6-1 while advancing to 4-1 against first-time opponents this season.
Phillips had a night to remember, breaking the Troy single-game record for steals and tying the NCAA record set by Daron "Mookie" Blaylock in 1987 and 1988 with 13 in 27 minutes. The newcomer was also two rebounds and assists away from a quadruple-double with 22 points, 13 steals, eight rebounds and eight assists.
Duke Miles (22) and Christyon Eugene (21) came off the bench for an offensive explosion as both players combined for 43 points on 16-of-27 shooting.
The Knights (2-6) fall in their sixth straight game despite 18 points from Brock Brown off the bench. Chaun Moore and Bryce Brown also produced double figures in the loss.
Early Thanksgiving Feast
Troy's road to victory started in the first 15 seconds when Zay Williams knocked down a deep two-point shot to take the early 2-0 lead and never looked back.
The Trojans immediately went on an 18-2 run in the opening 4:18 off points from Williams, Phillips, Eugene and Nate Tshimanga. Phillips's night looked special early on, as the senior had six steals on that run.
It was a 3-point party for the Trojans from there, as the team managed to make 13 3-pointers in the first half. Among the party were Aamer Muhammad, Jackson Fields, Phillips, Tshimanga and Eugene, as Troy led by 36, 66-30 when the team ended the first half.
SUNO battled back early in the second half, outscoring the Trojans 17-10 in the first eight minutes. With Moore at the free throw line, the Knights trimmed the lead to 29, 76-47, with 12:04 remaining.
When the Trojans needed life, head coach Scott Cross turned to Eugene off the bench, who scored seven of the following 11 points for Troy to reextend the lead to 40, 89-49 at the 11:16 mark.
Phillips cemented his night forever in the Troy record books with four minutes remaining. In 30 seconds, Phillips grabbed his eighth rebound, scored his 19th and 20th point at the charity stripe to put Troy's lead to 50, 103-53, and broke the Troy single-game steal record at 10 off the bad pass from Isaiah Sanders.
The guard's night wasn't over as he continued to rob the SUNO offense with three steals in the final three minutes to tie the NCAA single-game steal record and propel Troy to the 118-61 victory – 13th steal came against Sanders on a lost ball.
100-Point Thoughts from Cross
"It was a good overall performance tonight from our guys. I think the night belongs to Nelson Phillips, though. He tied an NCAA record for steals in a game with 13. I don't think I had 13 steals in my entire career. It was just amazing to watch him fly around and create chaos defensively. He was so close to a quadruple-double. He was plus-61 in his 27 minutes on the floor which is an outlandish stat. Duke Miles gave us a huge lift off the bench, scoring extremely well. And Spudd, Christyon Eugene also gave us a big lift. Those three guys were phenomenal tonight. The guys have two days off, and then we get back to work on Friday. We're going to Arkansas to win that game. We aren't going down there to just collect a check. They haven't seen a defense like ours."
Feasting Stats
• Phillips was flawless in the first half, shooting 5-of-5 from the field, 3-of-3 from deep and amassed six steals.
• Troy couldn't have asked for a better first half as the team shot a season-high 70.3 percent from the field for 66 points – converted 13 threes.
• The Trojans scored their 219th 100-point game with 188 points over SUNO – most points since 135 against Toccoa Falls on Nov. 11, 2016.
• For the first time since the Trojans were against Louisiana on Jan. 26, 2019, three players scored 20 or more points (Miles, Phillips, Eugene)
• Remy Graham scored his first career points, ending with five points on a perfect 2-of-2 from the field.
