Â
TROY, Ala. – The NCAA's all-time leader in career tackles, Carlton Martial, has been named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week for a second consecutive week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.Â
Â
Martial recorded 22 tackles in Troy's victory over Army this past Saturday as he passed Northwestern's Tim McGarigle for the most tackles in NCAA FBS history. The Mobile, Ala., native entered the game needing 20 tackles to set the record; he recorded 17 in the first half and broke the record in the third quarter.
Â
Troy held Army scoreless and to just 79 rushing yards in the second half while limiting the Black Knights to just 4.4 yards per carry and one rushing touchdown for the game after they entered averaging 5.71 yards per carry and 3.25 rushing touchdowns per game.
Â
Martial is the first player in Troy history to record 20-plus tackles in multiple games; he had 21 tackles against Coastal Carolina in 2020. His 22 tackles rank as the second most in a game this season at the FBS level and moved him to within 16 tackles of setting the all-time Troy tackles record set by Gerrick Pimienta during Troy's Division II era (1985-88).
Â
The Martial-led defense has held its last two opponents (Louisiana & Army) to a combined 216 yards, 93 rushing yards and just seven points in the second half. With the win over Army, Troy became just the second school since at least 2000 to win multiple games when scoring 10 or fewer points in a single season and just the seventh to win four games when scoring 17 or fewer points.Â
Â
Troy wraps up its regular season home slate Saturday, hosting ULM on Senior Day. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. at The Vet.
