TROY, Ala. – After a scoreless 34 minutes, Old Dominion punched in the winning goal to defeat Troy, 1-0, in the program's first-ever meeting on Thursday night at the Troy Soccer Complex.
The Trojans (3-6-2, 1-3-1 SBC) outshot the Monarchs (4-6-2, 2-2-1 SBC) 12-10 with seven shots on goal as the team fell to 1-2-1 at home.
Eight different Trojans let out a shot, with 7-of-12 shots coming from the bench unit. Taytum Terrell led the way in shots for the first time this season, going 2-for-2 with shots on goal.
Miya Lennon came off the bench to produce the game-winning goal in the 34th minute, while Megan Watts produced a team-high three shots on goal.
Chip Shot for the Win
Troy took a while to settle into the game, awaiting its first shot until Caylah Williams opened it up for Troy in the 29th minute.
Five minutes later, ODU marched down the field as Yuliia Khrystiuk dished off the pass to Lennon on the right side of the penalty box. Lennon hit the chip shot to the left corner with her right foot to give the Monarchs the 1-0 advantage.
The Trojans limped their way into the locker room before coming out of the gates in the second strong with three corner kick opportunities and three shots in the opening six minutes.
ODU kept Troy off the scoreboard as the Trojans made one final attempt in the last two minutes as Ella Owen and Ashley Rainho rocketed out shots. However, both were unsuccessful as the Monarchs walked away victorious, 1-0.
Hear from Lane
"I thought, for the most part, that we played really well. Old Dominion is a great team with a ton of athleticism and energy. We came out and weathered the storm and adjusted well to the match. We got outdone with a fluke shot on goal. Credit to them. They put our defenders in a suspect situation. But overall, our girls came out and responded in the second half to create some dangerous opportunities. We just weren't clinical enough in the final third."
The Stats Are on Our Side
• Troy was efficient with the offsides calls, having zero for the second straight match compared to ODU's five.
• Troy outshot Old Dominion 12-10, which puts the Trojans at 2-4-2 when they win the shot battle.
• The Trojans created multiple opportunities with a whopping seven corner kicks and maintained possession for 54 percent of the match.
• Williams returned from an injury to produce two shots with one on goal in 40 minutes of play.
Another New SBC Rival
