Troy Battles at ITA Southern Regionals, Martinez Serrano Battles Nation’s No. 8 Player

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Troy wrapped its play in the main draws at the ITA Southern Regionals Saturday with a flurry of action in the singles main draw plus one match in doubles. Freshman Mario Martinez Serrano stole the show for the Trojans winning his first round matchup in the main draw and battling the nation's No. 8 player in a three-set, three-hour thriller in the second round.

Martinez Serrano defeated UAB's Roman Postolka in the round of 64 in the main draw in straight sets to set up his thriller with Auburn's Tyler Stice. Stice, the No. 8 singles player in the country, took the opening set 6-4 before Martinez Serrano battled back for a 6-4 victory in the second set. Stice proved to be too much winning 6-2 in the third set.

Troy's other star freshman, Yeray Andres Pastor, picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win over Ruan Du Preez from Alabama State in the consolation bracket.

Carles Anton, Nicolas Simkin and Francisco Erramuspe will all play Sunday in consolation matches.
