FT. MYERS, FLA. – The Troy men's tennis team opened the spring season by blanking Binghamton, 7-0, before dropping a close match to Florida Gulf Coast, 4-3, on Saturday in Ft. Myers, Fla. Carles Anton, Noah Martens and Vito Llinares won each of their singles matches to pace the Trojans.

Troy (1-1) won in straight sets on all six courts in the opener, yielding just 18 games across the 12 sets played against Binghamton (0-2). The Trojans were just as dominant on the doubles' courts, winning all three matches and surrendering just eight games in the process.

Nicolas Simkin had the best performance for Troy winning 6-1, 6-0 on court four, while Anton won 6-0, 6-2 on court two.

Troy had its chances in the nightcap to a Florida Gulf Coast (2-0) team, which finished ranked in the top 65 nationally last season. The Eagles took home the doubles point to grab the 1-0 lead, winning 8-6 in a tiebreak on court two.

The Trojans jumped on top 2-1 thanks to victories from Llinares (6-1, 6-4) on court six and Martens (6-1, 7-5) on court three. Florida Gulf Coast pulled within a point of victory after consecutive wins on court five and court one and then sealed the win with a three-set decision on court four. Anton closed out his perfect day – 2-0 in both singles and doubles – with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win on court two.

Troy returns to action Monday at Miami; first serve is set for 9 a.m.
