TROY, Ala. – Coming off a semifinal run in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament last season and a successful fall run, the Troy men's tennis team opens the dual match portion of its schedule with a challenging run in Florida this weekend.
Troy opens the spring with a doubleheader Saturday against Binghamton (10 a.m.) and Florida Gulf Coast (3 p.m.) before closing out the trip against Miami on Monday at 9 a.m. The Hurricanes finished 2021 ranked 43rd nationally, while FGCU ended the year ranked 65th.
"This is going to be a challenging trip against three very good teams," head coach Rolando Vargas said. "We are an experienced squad and know what it takes to win. For us to reach the goals that we have established for ourselves this year, we have to play these types of teams and win. I told them to play relaxed, have confidence in their shots and know we can win – just go out there take care of business."
In addition to the semifinals appearance, the Trojans are coming off a final No. 8 ranking in the ITA Southern Region, and Troy returns three of their top four players from that squad. Carles Anton (16-3) and Pelayo Antuna (9-6) split time on the top court a year ago for the Trojans, and both picked up key victories against premier opponents this fall during tournament play.
Vito Llinares (16-6), Nicolas Simkin (15-5) and Chris Tasker (16-3) are also back in the lineup for Vargas after solid singles campaigns last year. Tasker and Simkin earned All-Sun Belt honors in doubles after posting a 13-4 mark together.
Vargas' lineup is deep, with Nicolas Rodriguez picking up six wins during the fall, while Noah Martens, Francisco Erramuspe and Maxime Hillhouse all earning four victories.
