Zion Williams Named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week

TROY, Ala. – The nation's interception leader, Zion Williams, has been named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon. The Troy cornerback intercepted a pair of passes and returned one for a touchdown in the Trojans' season-opening victory.
Williams bookended the second quarter with his two interceptions and was part of the Troy defense's four-interception effort. His first pick came following a Troy turnover in the red zone and gave the Trojans a 21-0 lead as he went 19 yards untouched into the end zone.
The Omaha, Neb., native sent the Trojans into the halftime break on a high note after snagging his second pick of the quarter around. This one came around midfield, and he again returned it 19 yards.
Williams was a vital part of a Troy defense that limited Southern to just 189 yards of total offense, which was the fewest allowed by the Trojans since 2019 and just the fifth time holding an opponent to less than 200 yards since 2006. Troy has now held five of its last seven opponents to 20 points or fewer and has 80 interceptions since the start of the 2016 season, the second-most in the country.
Troy returns to The Vet this weekend for a showdown against Liberty. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. on Military Appreciation Day.
