Troy (23-21, 9-8 SBC) raced out to an 8-0 lead before the Chants chipped away and pulled within 8-7 after eight innings. The Trojans plated a crucial insurance run in the ninth just before Marquez Oates retired the Chants (21-20, 5-9 SBC) in order to end the game.
The Trojan bats exploded for 17 hits, one shy of a season high, paced by three off the bat of Jesse Hall. Hall (3-for-5) and Donovan Whibbs (2-for-4) doubled twice while Drew Frederic (2-for-4) and Rigsby Mosley (2-for-6) recorded a double apiece.
Caleb Bartolero (2-for-4) registered his second multi-hit game of the series, scored twice and batted in another with a sac-fly while Nic Nolan went 2-for-2 and was hit by a pitch after entering to pinch hit in the fifth. Logan Cerny scored twice, batted in a run and finished with two hits for his seventh multi-hit performance in the last eight games.
Three of Troy's runs came via sac-fly, the most in a game for the Trojans this season. Troy put itself in position to score throughout the contest as the Trojans' leadoff batter reached base in eight of nine innings.
Orlando Ortiz (5-4) looked strong in a six-inning outing in which he struck out eight, walked three and allowed two runs to record his fourth quality start of the year. Oates secured his sixth save of the season, and second of the series, after striking out two in 1.1 innings.
Nick Parker (3-4) was tagged with the loss for Coastal Carolina after allowing six runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings.
Quotable – Head coach Mark Smartt
"I'm really happy for our team, they played so hard today. We got off to a great start again, I knew they were going to rally, and they did, but we stayed after it and showed some real toughness through that adverse time. I thought that run in the ninth was critical to take some pressure off. We clinched the series win on Saturday against a really good ball club. We did a lot of good things today to be proud of."
