Eight Trojans scored while seven hit safely as the Trojans (22-21, 8-8 SBC) grabbed their sixth win in their last eight games. Logan Cerny paced the offensive effort with a 3-for-4 day at the plate while Rigsby Mosley, Caleb Bartolero and Dalton Sinquefield each tallied two hits.
Garrett Gainous (7-4) worked around a six-spot in the fourth inning to pick up his seventh win of the season. Max Newton and Lance Johnson combined for two scoreless innings while Marquez Oates secured his fifth save of the year with two strikeouts in the ninth.
The Trojans started fast with four runs on five hits in the top of the first, highlighted by a three-run homer off the bat of Jesse Hall. Troy extended its lead to 7-0 in the fourth inning with three-straight RBI-singles from Cerny, Mosley and Bartolero.
The Chanticleers would answer in the bottom half of the inning with two home runs, including a grand slam, to pull within 7-6.
Bartolero raced home on a Chanticleer throwing error in the sixth inning to extend Troy's lead back to two, but Coastal Carolina cut it back to one with an RBI-triple in the bottom of the inning.
Drew Frederic's first hit of the day came in the seventh inning on a solo home run, his eighth of the year.
Newton, Johnson and Oates combined to hold Coastal Carolina scoreless over the last three frames, aided by a spectacular grab from Cerny at the wall for the final out, to preserve the 9-7 win.
Quotable – Head coach Mark Smartt
"We started fast with the big first inning, Jesse's two-out, two-strike three-run homer was a big blow in the game. We were able to keep scoring and did some really good things offensively. Garrett battled today and worked through the six-run inning. I thought he showed great poise and maturity after that inning. Max, Lance and Marquez did a great job finishing the game. We played well defensively again and will need to continue to play well to win the series."
