Kuessner Wins Gold to Lead Troy on Day Two of SBC Track & Field Championships

MOBILE, Ala. – Maja Kuessner posted the second-best mark in Troy history in the high jump at Saturday's Sun Belt Conference Track & Field Championship to take home the gold medal and lead the Trojans' day two efforts.

Kuessner's fourth jump cleared 1.75 meters which tied Louisiana's Frankie Griffin for the highest mark in the finals, but Kuessner took home the 10 points for the Trojans as she cleared the mark in her first attempt at the height.

Troy enters Saturday's final day of competition in fifth place on both the men's and women's leaderboards with plenty of point opportunities on the table. The men trail UT Arlington by just 20 points for the top spot, while the women are 57.5 points back of South Alabama.

Lauren Locke scored eight valuable points for the Troy women with a silver medal in the 3000m steeplechase with a school-record time of 10:47.04, while Samara Nelson finished seventh in the shot put with a throw of 13.91 meters to score a pair of points. On the men's side, Blake Vaughn placed eighth in the 3000m steeplechase and Nash Rutledge finished eighth in the shot put to land one point for Troy.

Among Troy's athletes competitng on Saturday will be Matthew Likely who qualified for the men's 100m finals on Saturday, while Troy will have three runners in the women's 800m finals, including top-seeded Gemma Finch.Â
