TROY, Ala. – Behind a complete effort from all 10 starters, Troy cruised past South Alabama, 3-0, Wednesday night at the Troy Softball Complex, extending its Sun Belt Conference win streak to 10.
For the first time in program history, Troy (26-6, 10-0 Sun Belt) has started off conference play unscathed through the first 10 games.
Leanna Johnson (15-3) opened up the contest firing on all cylinders, retiring the first nine batters faced.
Kelly Horne broke the deadlock in the bottom of the third contributing an infield single that scored Jade Sinness, who led off with a double to right field.
Troy's offense returned to the plate after another three up, three down inning by Johnson in the bottom of the fourth.
A leadoff walk by Mia Jenkins and a single by Candela Figueroa put a runner in scoring position for nine-hole hitter Logan Calhoun. Calhoun roped a single to left center plating the first of Troy's two runs of the frame.
Katie Lively's dominance at the plate continued as she smashed a single to left that scored Figueroa and gave the Trojans a 3-0 advantage.
South Alabama's Victoria Ortiz spoiled Johnson's perfect game in the top of the fifth with a double but was left stranded.
Following the double, the sophomore retired six of the final seven Jags (18-12, 6-4) to secure her 15th victory of the season. Johnson fanned 11 batters en route to the two-hit shutout, her seventh consecutive victory.
Olivia Lackie (11-6) suffered the loss for South Alabama after giving up three runs, eight hits and a trio of walks.
Quotable – Head Coach Beth Mullins
"I honestly am just really proud of this group. I think we pitched well, played great defense and had some timely hits. Overall, we had a lot of quality at-bats back-to-back-to-back. I thought we did a good job at preparing this week. I thought they showed up every day and were ready to work. I think they have done a good job at living by the motto and trying to go 1-0. South Alabama is a really quality team, and for Leanna Johnson to go out there and throw her game made me really proud of her."
