MOBILE, Ala. – Another slow start hampered the Trojans in Saturday's series finale against South Alabama in Mobile. Troy dropped its final game of the weekend, 8-0, to the Jaguars at Stanky Field.
Troy (13-13, 2-4 SBC) managed just one hit in the contest, a single from Drew Frederic in the third inning to extend his career-long on-base streak to 35 games.
South Alabama (16-10, 5-1 SBC) started fast with a two-run opening frame before taking a 6-0 lead with a four-spot in the bottom of the fifth. The Jags added a seventh run on a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth and their final run of the game on a sac-fly in the eighth.
Garrett Gainous (4-2) suffered the loss on the mound for the Trojans after allowing six runs in five innings. Lance Johnson made the 106th appearance of his career, the third most among all NCAA baseball players across all divisions.
South Alabama starter JoJo Booker (2-0) earned the win with a 10-strikeout performance while Jase Dalton earned his second save of the season.
Quotable – Head coach Mark Smartt
"Not a good performance. I did a poor job this weekend of getting our team prepared to play a really good South Alabama team. We got behind early in the game again and struck out way too much. It was just not a very good performance, and that's on me. As the head coach, I have to do a better job of leading the players in a better direction."
Notable
Troy remains on the road for a midweek contest against in-state foe Samford. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. from Joe Lee Griffin Field in Birmingham.
