TROY, Ala. – Troy put an exclamation point on its first Sun Belt series sweep since 2018 with a run-rule victory over Appalachian State Sunday afternoon at Riddle-Pace Field. The Trojans claimed game one of the doubleheader in convincing fashion, 9-4, before clinching the sweep with a 12-2 win in eight innings in the series finale.
Drew Frederic became Troy's all-time hits leader after he beat out the throw on an infield single in the opening frame of the day's second game. The shortstop also blasted two three-run homers on the day to bring his career hits total to 278, two ahead of Adam Bryant's (2008-11) 276.
Donovan Whibbs, returning from an eight-game hiatus due to injury, was responsible for the walk-off single that hit off the top of the scoreboard to end the series. The second baseman had a career day at the plate after going 7-for-9 with three RBIs and three runs across the doubleheader, including a career-high four hits in game two.
Dalton Sinquefield, Frederic and Logan Cerny all homered as part of a five-run fifth inning in game two of the doubleheader, marking the first time since 2015 against Kennesaw State that three Trojans homered in the same inning. Cerny was a single shy of hitting for the coveted cycle after recording a double, triple and a home run in the series finale.
Jesse Hall made several highlight reel plays at third base while logging multi-hit outings in both contests, a combined 4-for-7 day. Troy's 7-8-9 hitters – made up of Hall, Kyle Mock and Whibbs – combined for seven of the Trojans' 14 hits and five of nine runs scored in game one.
Rigsby Mosley registered two doubles in a 3-for-5 performance in the day's first game to pass Frederic for fourth on Troy's all-time doubles list with 53 career two-baggers. Tanner Jackson's first hit of the season delivered two RBIs in a 1-for-3 day in game two.
Orlando Ortiz (3-4) and Bay Witcher (4-2) were the pitchers of record for Troy in games one and two, respectively. Ortiz worked around some early adversity in game one to post four consecutive scoreless frames and strike out four in a winning effort. Witcher looked strong in the series finale after allowing only two runs on five hits in 6.0 innings of work.
Matt Snell (2.0 IP/ 0 R / 3 K), Max Newton (1.0 IP, 0 R, 2 K) and DJ Wilkinson (2.0 IP, 0 R, 1 K) were all effective out of the bullpen for the Trojans throughout the day.
Troy (19-19, 7-8 SBC) climbed back to .500 on the season with the sweep over an App State (15-20, 6-6 SBC) team that entered the weekend in a tie for first place in the Sun Belt East Division. The Trojans improve to 14-4 all-time against the Mountaineers and have never lost a series.

"It was really good work today by our team. I'm really happy for our players, they did a great job in both games. Anytime you sweep a team at this level, you've done some good things. We pitched exceptionally well and played great defense throughout the weekend. Great outfield play, we took several hits away from App State this weekend. A lot to be proud of and, most importantly, I'm really happy for our team for getting a Sun Belt sweep which is outstanding."
On Drew Frederic's Hits Record
"Drew is going to have several records by the time he's done here. He's been a fabulous player for five years. Being the all-time hits leader, that's special. We've got a lot of games left so he's only going to keep adding to it. The next guy is going to have a lot of work to do to catch him."
