Trojans Drop Game Two at Southeastern Louisiana

HAMMOND, La. – Troy dropped game two of the series against Southeastern Louisiana on a windy afternoon Saturday in Hammond. A six-run fourth inning proved to be the difference in the ball game as the Trojans fell, 7-1, to the Lions.
Easton Kirk recorded his first multi-hit game of the season, the fifth of his career, as the lone Trojan with more than one hit. Caleb Bartolero recorded his fourth RBI of the year to score Troy's only run of the day.
The Trojans struck first for the second game in a row after an RBI-single from Bartolero scored Dalton Sinquefield from third. The Lions evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the third on a well-executed sac-bunt.
Troy had runners on first and second with one out in the top of the fourth when a controversial double play call was upheld after review. Southeastern Louisiana took the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Garrett Gainous hit a batter and walked one with the bases loaded. The next batter, Jacob Burke hit a grand slam over the left field wall to give the Lions a 7-1 lead.
In the seventh inning, William Sullivan singled through the right side to put runners on the corners with one out, but a double play ended the inning. Southeastern Louisiana finished the day with three double plays.
The pitchers from both sides were solid in the latter half of the game, closing with five scoreless frames.
Gainous (2-1) hung the loss for the Trojans after lasting just 4.0 innings. Max Newton entered in relief and pitched three scoreless innings while striking out a pair of Lions. Davis Burgin struck out one and retired all three batters he faced in the eighth.
Will Warren (2-0) notched the win for Southeastern Louisiana after not allowing an earned run for his second consecutive start.
Quotable – Head Coach Mark Smartt
"Not a good day today, losing the series after the first two games is a tough pill to swallow. We did swing the bat better as the game went on, that was a good sign to see. The fourth inning got away from us; had a couple borderline pitches that we didn't get the call on. I'm disappointed with the outcome, we've got to learn how to play harder and tougher on the road. Tomorrow is a very important game for our team and our program."
