HAMMOND, La. – Troy fell in the series finale against Southeastern Louisiana on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field. Despite out hitting the Lions 9-7, the Trojans dropped a close 4-2 contest.
Nic Nolan got back to his multi-hit ways with his sixth game of the season with at least two hits, both of which were RBI singles. William Sullivan went 3-for-4 and scored a run while freshman Seth Johnson logged the first multi-hit game of his career with a 2-for-4 day as the designated hitter.
Bay Witcher looked solid in his third start of the year. He tossed six innings, struck out three and allowed two runs. Despite pitching just a third of an inning, Marquez Oates (1-1) wore the loss for the Trojans.
Troy (7-5) struck first for the third game in a row after Nolan ripped a single that bounced off the diving Lion first baseman's glove to score Sullivan from second. Southeastern looked to answer in the bottom half of the inning after placing two runners on with one out, but a double play by Easton Kirk ended the inning.
The Trojans struck again after a well-executed sac-bunt by Logan Cerny moved Caleb Bartolero and Sullivan into scoring position. Nolan then singled through the right side to score Sullivan from third.
Southeastern Louisiana (7-4) responded in the bottom half of the inning after loading the bases, but Witcher was able to limit the damage to just a run. The Lions tied the game two innings later with a solo home run to left by Preston Faulkner.
The Lions took the lead in the bottom of the seventh after Evan Keller sent a chopper to second to score a run. Southeastern Louisiana plated an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to secure a 4-2 lead.
Noah Hughes (1-0) picked up his first win of the season on the mound for Southeastern after allowing one hit in three innings. Lion starter Brennan Stuprich allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits.
Quotable – Head coach Mark Smartt
"I'm proud of our team today. The result wasn't what we hoped for or needed, but we played our best game of the week when it mattered the most. We had played terrible in our first three games of the trip – Wednesday, Friday, Saturday – but we today we had a chance to win all the way through. We did some good things today, just not enough of them. They made some plays late and we couldn't finish the deal."
On Bay Witcher
"I'm really proud of Bay Witcher, he was outstanding in his performance. He gave us a chance to win which is all you can hope for."
Notable
The Trojans return home for a Tuesday matchup against in-state for Samford. First pitch from Riddle-Pace Field is set for 6 p.m.
