AUBURN, Ala. – Leanna Johnson flashed her dominance in the circle once again, powering Troy past Southeastern Louisiana, 9-6, before Troy's offense utilized a late game rally to drop the Lions, 9-6, in Saturday's doubleheader at Jane B. Moore Field.
Johnson's (8-2) routine dominance in the circle continued as the sophomore fanned 16 batters en route to her eighth win of the season. Johnson's 16 strikeouts matched her career high set in 2019 against Appalachian State.
The Trojans (15-4) smashed 21 total hits and plated 18 runs on the day to earn the doubleheader sweep over Southeastern Louisiana (8-8).
Game One: Troy 9, Southeastern Louisiana 6
Troy's offense broke the game open in the bottom of the third inning plating four runs.
Jade Sinness doubled to right-center to ignite Troy's offense. After Katie Webb and Candela Figueroa drew back-to-back walks to load the bases, Katie Lively smashed a three-run bases clearing double to score the first runs of the contest. Anslee Finch followed with a double of her own to cap off the inning.
Southeastern Louisiana answered in the top of the fourth by capitalizing on three hits and an error to cut the Trojans lead to just 4-3.
A beautifully executed double steal in the bottom half of the frame plated an insurance run for the Trojans. After a scoreless fifth frame, Troy's offense returned to the plate with the same fire and posted another four-run frame.
Logan Calhoun led off the sixth with a single down the right-field line. Sinness roped a single up the middle to put runners on first and second.
Figueroa then laid a sacrifice bunt to move runners into scoring position, allowing Calhoun to score on a wild pitch.
A pair of consecutive walks reloaded the bases with one out for Lively, who crushed a single through the right side to score two and give the Trojans a 9-3 advantage.
The Lions' Madisen Blackford blasted a two-out, three-run home run in the seventh, but Southeastern Louisiana couldn't capitalize on the momentum after cutting Troy's lead to three.
MC Comeaux (3-1) suffered the loss for the Lions after allowing nine runs, eight hits and seven walks.
Game Two: Troy 9, Southeastern Louisiana 6
After an inside the park home run scored one for the Lions in the top of the first, Troy's offense exploded, scoring five runs off six hits. The big hit was a two-RBI double smashed through the right-center gap by Kelly Horne.
Southeastern Louisiana refused to let a four-run deficit to settle long, posting a five-run third frame to take its first lead of the day.
Kynsley Rae Blasingame (2-1) entered in relief during the third and forced a groundout to work out of the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, Jade Sinness sailed a ball over the center field wall to even the game at six.
Blasingame retired six of the next seven batters to send the game into the bottom of the sixth inning where Sinness sparked a late rally with an infield single. With two-outs, Katie Webb roped a double to left-center scoring Sinness.
Horne followed right behind in the four hole reaching on a throwing error by the Lion's third baseman. The error scored the second run of the inning.
