HAMMOND, La. – Troy dropped its series opener to Southeastern Louisiana Friday night at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field. The Trojans struggled to string together hits and stranded 11 runners as they fell 7-2 to the Lions.
Nic Nolan moved from the nine hole to the fifth spot in the lineup and continued his hot start to the year, recording his fifth multi-hit game of the season. The newcomer has now hit safely in nine of 10 games this year.
The Trojans (7-3) struck first in the top of the first inning after Nolan singled to load the bases before Easton Kirk drew a walk to plate the first run of the game. The Lions answered quickly, however, with three runs in the bottom half of the opening frame highlighted by four hits in the inning.
Southeastern Louisiana (5-4) threatened again in the bottom of the third by loading the bases with one out, but Orlando Ortiz struck one out and forced a pop up to get out of trouble. Troy loaded the bases in the top half of the fourth, but failed to plate a run.
The Lions took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth after a single from Evan Keller scored a runner from second.
Troy cut into the deficit in the top of the fifth when Kirk hit a hard grounder down the first base line to score Logan Cerny from third. Southeastern Louisiana once again had a response with a three-run homer to take a 7-2 lead.
Pitchers from both sides then went to work, putting up four scoreless frames to end the game.
Ortiz (2-1) suffered the loss on the hill for the Trojans, his first of the season. In relief, Lance Johnson tossed 1.2 hitless innings and struck out one while Matt Snell retired six of the seven batters he faced.
Kyle Bartley (1-1) earned the win on the mound for Southeastern Louisiana after allowing no earned runs on just two hits in relief of starter Trey Shaffer.
