TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Troy Softball team went toe-for-toe with one of the top teams in the nation before defensive miscues allowed tournament host No. 3 Alabama to plate the two runs necessary to take the Sunday finale from Troy, 2-0, Sunday at Rhoads Stadium.
Â
Alabama (14-0) hopped on the board first in the bottom of the opening frame using a passed ball and a wild pitch to score Alexis Mack, who led off with a single.
Â
However, Leanna Johnson (7-2) picked up right where she left off, retiring the Tide in back-to-back frames to send the game into the fourth.
Â
Troy (13-3) threatened in the top of the frame when Katie Webb led off with a surprise bunt single. Kelly Horne followed reaching on a fielding error by the shortstop, but the Trojans stranded both runners.
Â
A Troy throwing error in the bottom half of the fourth scored pinch runner Kayla Davis to give Alabama a two-run advantage.
Â
The pitchers' duel continued with both sides hanging zeros to send the game into the top of the seventh. Needing two runs to keep the game alive, Anslee Finch tried to spark some momentum with an infield single but was left stranded.
Â
Lexi Kilfoyl (6-0) earned the win for the Tide scattering three hits and a walk en route to her sixth win of the season.
Â
Johnson and Webb were both named to the Easton Crimson Classic All-Tournament Team.
Â
Johnson recorded a 1.05 ERA after scattering five hits and three runs over 20 innings of action. The Brantley, Ala., native fanned 33 batters and pinned opponents to a .077 batting average.
