JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Nicole Lorup and Anna Claire Little are in the red following 28 holes at the First Coast Classic to lead the Troy women's golf team to a first place standing on the leaderboard. Teams were pulled off the course midway through Monday's second round at the Deerwood Country Club due to heavy rain and lightning.
"We got off to a really hot start in the second round and made a bunch of birdies," head coach Randy Keck said. "It's unfortunate that the weather came in because we were playing really well. We hit a bunch of good iron shots and putted really well. We were making a lot of 8-to-10 foot putts and really played with a lot of confidence."
Lorup and Little each carded six birdies during their play Monday, which is three off the overall leader. Where the pair shined was keeping big numbers off their cards. Lorup, the individual leader, had just a pair of bogeys in her opening round and her card is clean through 10 holes in round two, while Little, who is a shot back in second place, had two bogeys in round one and has just one in round two.
"Anna Claire has just continued to work on her iron play, and she is really swinging it well right now," Keck said. "She is not missing many greens and is giving herself a lot more opportunities with the putter. Nicole had a little bit of a bad week last week and bounced back like we expect her to. She is a great leader and just goes out and takes care of her business."
Troy holds a three shot lead over both Arkansas State and North Florida, and the Trojans are currently 7-under par in the second round with all five golfers having made the turn. Troy is seven shots up on FIU for fourth place and South Alabama is eight shots back in fifth. The Trojans' 24 birdies are tied with Western Kentucky for the most in the field with seven coming in the first seven holes of the second round.
Elisabeth Preus is tied for ninth place at even par through 30 holes after shooting 3-under with three birdies and no bogeys so far in the second round after opening with a 3-over 75 in the morning session. Elizabeth Caldarelli is tied for 48th place at 8-over but currently sits 1-under in the second round, while ShaeLee Scarberry is tied for 52nd place at 9-over following a 77 in the opening round and her current card of 4-over.
Teams will return to the course Tuesday morning and will finish the second round and play straight through into the third and final round beginning at 6:45 a.m. (CT).
