Notes: Troy and South Alabama Meet Twice in Rivalry Week Showdown

TROY, Ala. – For the first time since March of 2013, Troy and South Alabama will play each other twice in the same weekend. As part of the Sun Belt Conference's rivalry week, the Trojans will host the Jaguars on Thursday at 6 p.m. before traveling to Mobile on Saturday for a 4 p.m. matchup.
Due to covid-19, all Sun Belt schools are playing their rival just twice this season in a home-and-home format in the same week. Rivalry week started on Wednesday with App State and Coastal Carolina and will conclude Saturday with Troy at South Alabama.

Troy will be honoring Kay Yow, former NC State head coach, and all the women who have battled breast cancer as part of its annual pink game. The Trojans will have two pink games this season, Thursday vs South Alabama and Friday, Feb. 19 vs Georgia State. On top of wearing pink jerseys, Troy will have a few silent auction items at each game and will be selling t-shirts for $10. All proceeds will go to helping those battling breast cancer.

Against Ga. Southern there would seven different career marks set. Jasmine Robinson set career-highs in points scored (33), field goals made (13), three pointers made (6) and free throws made (9), Janiah Sandifer set career marks in points scored (21) and free throws made (10) while Felmas Koranga set a career best with 15 rebounds.
ELITE SCORING
For the ninth consecutive season Troy is leading the Sun Belt in scoring. The Trojans are averaging 86.1 ppg (most in the Rigby era). The next closest team is Ga. Southern who is averaging 76.9. South Alabama is currently averaging 64.7 ppg
MORE SCORING
Three Troy players have already eclipsed their point totals from the 2019-20 season. After scoring 153 points a season ago, Tyasia Moore has already scored 168. Janiah Sandifer, after scoring 99 points in each of the last two seasons has scored 169 this season and Tiyah Johnson went from scoring 173 points in her first season in Troy to scoring 212 points this year.

Alexus Dye has been the top player in the Sun Belt Conference and one of the best players in the country. Through 17 games she has earned a nation best 14 double-doubles. The senior is currently the only player in the Sun Belt averaging a double-double, while leading the conference in rebounding (12.3 per game) and ranking second in scoring (15.8 ppg). Dye is also leading the SBC in defensive boards per game (8.9), FG attempted (233) and made (121), FG% (51.9) and total rebounds (209). Nationally, Dye ranks 7th in defensive boards, 22nd in made field goals, 47th in field goal percentage, 144th in ppg, 9th in total rebounds (176) and 15th in boards per game.

The Trojans have made rebounding their thing ever since Chanda Rigby took over the program nine years ago. After leading the NCAA in rebounds per game average each of the last three seasons, Troy once again finds themselves alone in the top spot. Troy is averaging an NCAA best 51.0 rebounds per game. South Carolina is the only other school averaging at least 50 boards per contest. Troy also leads the NCAA in total rebounds with 867 while ranking 2nd in offensive boards per game (18.8) and 3rd in defensive boards per game (32.2)

South Alabama enters Thursday on a three-game winning streak after sweeping Coastal Carolina this past weekend. In road games this season the Jaquars are 4-4 while posting a 7-3 record at home. South is led by Savannah Jones (11.9 ppg, 7.3 rpg) and two-time preseason player of the year, Antoinette Lewis (11.0 ppg, 9.0 rpg)
