Troy interim head coach Brandon Hall made sure he paid tribute to the 10 Trojan seniors who played their last game for the program on Saturday.
Â
"I told the seniors right now it may not feel like it, but their impact on this program will one day have a huge impact in their lives," Hall said. "They will understand what they've done and what they've been a part of. Troy's a great place and Troy will win again. Being a part of such a great program, that's something they can be proud of."
Â
Troy's seniors include running back B.J. Smith, center Dylan Bradshaw, wide receiver Reggie Todd, linebacker Anthony Davis, safety Kyle Nixon, defensive end John Hines, defensive tackles Cherokee Glasgow and Elgin Griffin, kicker Kyle Coale and long snapper Cameron Kaye.Â
Â
No bowl:Â Georgia State's 37-10 victory was Troy's third straight loss to end the season. The Trojans finished 5-7, a victory short of bowl eligibility. They were also 3-5 in the Sun Belt.
Â
They were 4-3 overall on Oct. 16 after a 31-28 win at Texas State but finished 1-4 as a back-loaded schedule took its toll. A home win over South Alabama on Nov. 6 was the team's final victory. The Trojans closed with home losses to Sun Belt East champion Appalachian State, West champion Louisiana and Saturday in Atlanta to Georgia State.
Â
Throw it around:Â Gunnar Watson completed 21 passes to nine different Trojans on Saturday. The quarterback threw for 287 yards. He was intercepted twice and did not throw a touchdown pass.Â
Â
Deshon Stoudemire led the team with four catches for 80 yards, including a 39-yard completion. Tez Johnson had four catches for 52 yards and had a 45-yarder. Marcus Rogers had a 39-yard catch. Kyran Griffin-Isom had a 20-yard completion.Â
Â
First miss:Â Troy kicker Brooks Buce ran his field goal streak to 8-for-8 on the season with his 48-yarder in the final minute of the first half. That cut Georgia State's lead to 17-3 at halftime.Â
Buce's attempt at a perfect season fell when his 45-yard try hit high on the left upright and bounced away with 4:37 remaining in the third quarter.Â
Â
Power punting:Â Troy's Luke Magliozzi had a nice game. In three attempts, Magliozzi averaged 49 yards per kick, including a long of 55 yards. A 44-yard punt was muffed midway through the first quarter and recovered by Troy.
Â
Martial watch:Â Burlsworth Trophy finalist Carlton Martial, who is the nation's active leader in career tackles, had six tackles, one sack and broke up a pass on Saturday. It snapped a streak of five games with double-digit tackles for the junior inside linebacker. Fellow linebacker K.J. Robertson led the Trojans with nine tackles.
Â
Troy's defense, which specialized in negative plays for most of this season, finished with two sacks and four tackles for loss, well under its season averages in both categories.
Â
Third-quarter troubles:Â Troy was slow to start the second half in its final three games of this season. Granted, they faced excellent opponents, but the Trojans were outscored a combined 48-0 in the third quarter against Louisiana (14-0), Appalachian State (21-0) and Georgia State (13-0). Â
Â
The series:Â Troy leads the series 5-4 overall. The Panthers are 4-3 in Atlanta, the Trojans are 3-1 in Troy.
Â
Georgia State has won the last three meetings.
Â
What's next:Â The season is over. And, really, there are questions to be determined.Â
Â
Hall noted the team's youth and said there are a lot of pieces in place that the next coach – whoever it will be – can work with.
Â
"There's a great nucleus here. There's a great culture, believe it or not," Hall said. "We've just got to find a couple missing pieces here and there. These kids want to win. They care. They're committed to doing that."
