TROY, Ala. – The Sun Belt Conference announced that Amara Anderson and Julia Brooks garnered 2021 All-Sun Belt honors on Wednesday. Brooks earned first-team recognition for the first time in her career, and Anderson earned the second-team award, making it her third straight year with all-conference recognition after appearing on the All-Conference first team the last two years.
"I am very thankful that the Sun Belt coaches recognized the tremendous play of both Julia and Amara this year," head coach Josh Lauer said. "This is well-deserved recognition for both of them and continued testament not just their efforts and success but the efforts and success of our entire team.
Julia Brooks- First Team
Brooks led the Trojan offense all year. Brooks was the only player in the conference to be top 10 in four statistical categories (hitting %, kills/set, blocks/set & points/set) and is the only middle hitter in the top 10 in the kills/set and points/set categories and accumulated double-digit kills in 19 of 27 matches.
The St. Louis, Mo., native set a career-high in kills with 24 in the Trojans win over Georgia Southern earlier in the year. She totaled 325 kills throughout the regular season and 93 blocks to lead the Trojans in both categories.
"Julia had a breakout season," Lauer said. She was one of the most dominating players in the conference and arguably the best middle hitter in the Sun Belt. Julia set a goal back in the spring to be a First Team All-Conference performer, so I'm thrilled to see her achieve this goal. Julia is one of the most dedicated, team-oriented, and self-disciplined players on our team and that I have ever coached. She values her teammates and brings out the best in them every day by modeling elite-level work ethic and kindness."
Amara Anderson- Second Team
Anderson averaged 10.52 assists/set (second overall), .45 services aces/set (third overall), and also guided the Troy offense to 12.95 kills/set (fifth overall) all in conference play this year. Anderson's 1052 total assists this season helped her surpass the 4000-career assist mark for her career. She is now the all-time assists leader in the rally score era at Troy and only needs 562 assists to become the all-time assists leader in Trojan history.
The Alpharetta, Ga., native had 59 assists against Georgia Southern, which was the most assists of any player in the conference this year. Anderson ranks 17th in the entire country in total assists.
"This season, Amara guided our offense to the second-highest points per set production in Troy volleyball history in the modern rally-score era," Lauer said. "She is one of the hardest workers on the team day and day out and has made great strides this season in her competitive composure and leadership. In a league full of very talented setters, Amara continues to stand out as one of the very best."
Anderson and Brooks will look to lead the Trojans in the upcoming Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
