MACON, Ga. – Despite Felmas Koranga's second double-double of the season, Troy fell to the reigning SoCon Conference Tournament Champions Mercer, 75-66, Monday night at Hawkins Arena.
Koranga ignited for a season-high 19 points and 12 rebounds through her team-leading 31 minutes.
Jaron Dougherty and Shannon Titus led the way for the Bears (2-1) tallying 19 and 18 points, respectively.
How It Happened
The Trojans (2-1) and Bears went toe-to-toe through the opening points of the matchup before 6-0 run sparked by Shannon Titus gave Mercer a 19-13 advantage through the first period.
Troy answered with a 4-0 run on made buckets by Amber Leggett and Koranga to bring the game back within one score. A five-minute scoring drought allowed Mercer to generate a seven-point advantage before Troy went on a 6-0 run to close the gap to just 27-24 with 1:31 left in the half, but a pair of makes from Titus sent the Bears into the break with a 30-24 lead.
After a pair of layups from Koranga, Mercer used a 7-0 run over the next two and a half minutes of action to take a 44-28 advantage midway through the third period.
The Trojans answered with 10 made free throws from Tina Stephens, Jhileiya Dunlap, Leggett, Brianna Harris and Za'Nautica Downs to enter the fourth down 53-39.
Back-to-back buckets by the Bears to open the final quarter of play advanced their lead to as many as 19, but sparked by a jumperfrom Downs, the Trojans began chipping away at Mercer's lead. In the end the Trojans got to within nine, before ultimately falling.
Quotable – Head Coach Chanda Rigby
"Mercer's big three that score night-in and night-out for them did a great job tonight. They created separation between our defense with some step-back shots early. And then we couldn't defend, or hit shots. I think we started like 0-for-14 from the 3-point line at one point. It's tough to win on the road when you're shooting that percentage, and they're making shots. We need to learn from this. Whenever you go on the road you need to be 15 points better than they are to begin with, and we weren't tonight. We'll have to breakdown the film and make sure we don't repeat mistakes."
