ATLANTA, Ga. – Led by a clutch 16 kill performance from Julia Brooks, Troy toppled Georgia State in a five-set thriller Saturday at the GSU Sports Arena.
Brooks tallied 16 kills on a .500 hitting percentage to lead the Trojans. Tori Hester also posted a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs on the night.
"I'm really proud of our team, head coach Josh Lauer said. "That was a hard-fought victory and a great finish to our regular season. We showed a lot of grit especially in the fifth set. Now, our focus shift to the conference tournament!"
Set One
Powered by a kill and block from Brooks, Troy hopped out on an early 3-0 lead and never looked back. A Brooks kill and an ace from Cheyenne Hayes gave Troy a six-point advantage midway through the set. Back-to-back kills from Hayes and Hester secured a 25-17 opening set win for the Trojans.
Set Two
Georgia State looked to bounce back in the second set, trading scores through the opening 12 points before the Trojans went on a 5-0 run to take a 17-12 lead. A pair of late sets runs sparked by a kill from Hester and a service error handed the Trojans 25-16 second set victory.
Set Three
After Troy boasted an early 14-6 lead, the Panthers strung together a 4-0 run to bring the set back within reach. Georgia State tied the set at 20 all before five of the final seven points to send the match to a fourth set.
Set Four
The Trojans once again opened on an early 4-0 lead, but Georgia State climbed back to take a 15-14 lead at the media timeout. The squads traded points, putting Troy within one at the 20-point mark, but an eventual 2-0 run by Georgia State forced a deciding set.
Set Five
Led by four kills from Brooks, Troy hopped out to an early 8-3 lead. A 3-0 and 4-0 run from the Panthers gave Georgia State a late 14-13 lead. The Trojans stuffed the Panther run with a 3-0 stretch to secure the match victory.
