FOLEY, Ala. – Troy Soccer's 2021 campaign came to a close after a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to ULM in the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Monday at the Foley Sports Complex.
The Trojans (7-10-1, 4-6-0 Sun Belt) looked to jump on the board early when Nia Wilson fired off a shot in the fifth minute that ULM (13-4-2, 5-4-1 Sun Belt) goalie Hailey Hillock was able to barely make a play on and push it over the net.
In the 38th minute, the Warhawks earned a penalty kick following a handball that forward Theoni Zerva was able to knock past goalkeeper Lindsey LaRoche for the eventual 1-0 win.
Troy's best look in the second half came when a foul set up Jordan Stack for a free kick. Stack fired a strike that Hillock again was able save, punching it over the goal.
Quotable – Head Coach Nicole Waters
"Words cannot describe how proud I am of this group of players for the way they dealt with adversity. Just a week before their season began, they were given a new coach to lead them, and they took on the change with absolutely no fear and one goal in mind. Every single one of them worked incredibly hard to make the program better, and I am so grateful to have been a part of this season with them. To the seniors, Kate Eubanks, Alisa Detlefsen, Britt Ellmore, KK Pawelcyzck and Logan Smith, thank you for your dedication to the team these past four years. You each did great things for this program."
