Â
TROY, Ala. – Troy junior linebacker Carlton Martial has been named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week following his 18 tackles and two tackles for loss in the Trojans' victory at Texas State over the weekend.
Â
A Mobile, Ala., native, Martial's 18 tackles are tied for the third-most in a game this season nationally, the second-most in his career and the fifth most in a game in Troy history. His 9.02 career tackles per game are the most among active players, with at least 20 games played, and his 379 career tackles are the second-most nationally among active players.
Â
Martial led a Troy defense that held Texas State to just 92 rushing yards in the game, Troy's fourth game this season holding an opponent to less than 100 rushing yards. In addition, the Trojan defense forced three turnovers in the fourth quarter and limited the Bobcats to just 55 yards in the final period as the Trojans rallied for the 31-28 victory.
Â
The two tackles for loss propelled Martial into fourth place in Sun Belt history with 46 stops behind the line in his career, which is the second most in Troy history and just nine behind DeMarcus Ware.
Â
Behind Martial's 64 tackles and nine tackles for loss on the year, Troy has allowed 2,001 yards through the first seven games of the season, which is the third-fewest in Sun Belt Conference history.
Â
Troy is off this week before traveling to No. 14 Coastal Carolina on Thursday, Oct. 28, for a nationally televised game on ESPN2.
