Troy, Ala. – The Trojans came up just short Saturday night after falling to Georgia State in four sets from Trojan Arena (17-25, 25-21, 22-25, 21-25) for the Panther's first win over Troy since September, 28th 2018.
"That was a tough loss tonight," head coach Josh Lauer said. "Georgia State played well and put a lot of pressure on us to be efficient offensively, and we struggle to put offensive plays together tonight. We will need to put this behind us quickly, make good adjustments in practice on Monday, and prepare for another competitive match on Tuesday against South Alabama."
Once again, Troy (11-8, 4-4) was led by Julia Brooks, who led the Trojans with 12 kills and four blocks. Amara Anderson led the match again in the assist category with 43, while Tori Hester led the team with 11 digs with eight kills.
Georgia State (4-14, 1-7) won their first conference game as Evoni Lemons, and Julianna Truscott recorded 10 kills. Jenna Brown and Claire Lewis each added 17 assists and ava Vlkovic had a match-high 14 digs. The Panthers out blocked Troy 15 to seven.
First Set: It was a slow start for the Trojans as there was only one tie score in the set at 1-1. The Trojans would go on a four-point run capped off by back-to-back serve aces from Alison Siersma. The Panthers responded with a four-point run of their own, providing the needed cushion not to let Troy back into the set and finish 25-17 in favor of Georgia St. The Trojans finished with 10 kills and 10 errors.
Second Set: The Trojans would respond in a much tighter set, with seven tie scores and six lead changes throughout. After a kill by Cheyenne Hayes, the Trojans led at the media timeout. Another four-point run this time was led by Natalie Hummel, who got back-to-back aces of her own to stretch the lead more. Savannah poling would add three of her season-high seven kills in this set, including one to get to match point, which would be won by Alison Siersma, evening the match at one set all.
Third Set: Despite having more kills than Georgia State in the third set. The Trojans hit .167 and got behind four points once again late in the set. Just as the Trojans were mounting a comeback, an unsuccessful challenge saw the set end in Georgia State's favor.
Fourth Set: The Trojans did all they could to try and close the gap, but service errors hurt the Trojans in their effort to continue the match as the Panthers would win the set 25-21 and win the match.
Up Next: Troy will continue their home stand as rival South Alabama visits Trojan Arena for a mid-week clash on Tuesday, October 19 at 6 p.m.
