TROY, Ala. – Coming off a pair of solid finishes and a week off to rest, the Troy women's golf team is back on the road this week for the Lady Red Wolves Classic at the 6,161-yard Sage Meadows Country Club on Monday and Tuesday.
Troy finished fifth at the Sea Best Jacksonville Classic its last time out after finishing third at the Hoover Classic the week before. ShaeLee Scarberry is playing the best golf of her career for the Trojans and is the reigning Sun Belt Golfer of the Week.
The Trojan junior has paced Troy in all three events this year and leads the squad with a 72.44 stroke average (0.44 vs. par) with a team-best three rounds under par.
"All of ShaeLee's hard work is finally paying off," head coach Randy Keck said. "She has worked really hard on her ball-striking, and because of that, she is now an elite-level ball striker. ShaeLee has always been a good putter, and now you combine that with her new ball-striking ability, and you can see the evidence on the golf course."
Elisabeth Preus is coming off a tie for seventh her last time out, which included a final round 2-under 70, the best round by anyone in the field that day. Preus carries a 74.11 average on the year into the event this week, while Elizabeth Caldarelli is close behind at 75.33. Bruna Roqueta and Anna Claire Little will comprise the rest of Troy's lineup, while Alyssa Mercado will play as an individual.
Little has seen all but one of her nine rounds count towards the team card, Caldarelli has one of Troy's five rounds under par this year, Roqueta is tied for second on the team with a 74.00 average in the final round, and Mercado is coming off back-to-back rounds of 73.
"We've had a good week of practice," Keck said. "We used the time off to correct some things in our swings and really focus on our wedge game. This golf course is going to be one of the best fits for our team all year. The bentgrass greens are something that most of them have grown up playing. So, if we play like I know we're capable off and take care of business, this is a tournament that we have a chance to win."
