TROY, Ala. – Coming off a promising season which was cut short, the Troy women's golf team opens its fall season Monday and Tuesday at the Hoover Invitational hosted by UAB at the Hoover Country Club. Teams will play 36 holes Monday and finish with 18 holes Tuesday.
The Trojans won three tournaments last season, including one in which they were pulled off the course due to COVID-19, and return their top four scorers from that team in addition to welcoming a pair of graduate transfers to the roster.
"The ceiling is unlimited for this team," head coach Randy Keck said. "Talent wise they are very, very good. We need to work on being tougher at times when it matters in tournaments – need to grow in finishing rounds when the pressure is on. From a talent prospect, we have a chance to be really, really good."
Leading the charge for Keck's squad is sophomore Nicole Lorup who set the Troy single-season record with a 72.56 stroke average over her 25 rounds last season which featured nine rounds under par and three in the 60s. Lourp carries a Troy-best 73.43 career average into the 2020-21 season after picking up a pair of individual wins last year.
"Nicole brings a proven track record and we know what we're going to get every week from her," Keck said. "The nice thing about our team this year is we've added some depth where she doesn't feel like she has to carry 100 percent of the load all the time. One of our grad transfers Courtney Vogel is leading our qualifying and she adds depth at the top of the lineup which goes a long way."
Vogel posted a 74.87 average, four top 10 finishes and a victory in her final season (2018-19) at Grand Canyon which included four rounds in the 60s. Keck will also turn to freshman Elisabeth Presus and sophomore ShaeLee Scarberry. The duo combined for six rounds under par, eight top 10 finishes and a victory by Scarberry at the Town & Country Invitational last year.
Judith Castro will also provide a veteran presence in the lineup for the Trojans after playing 55 rounds the last two years after transferring to Troy from San Jose State. Keck will have his full roster on the course with Anna Claire Little, Elizabeth Caldarelli and Brooklyn Bostick all playing as individuals.
