Troy Volleyball Historic Seasons: 1990 Gulf South Champions

The 1990 Troy volleyball team was one of the most dominant squads in school history. They eclipsed school records in matches played, victories, consecutive victories and all-conference selections en route to their second consecutive Gulf Conference championship.
Troy opened the season tearing through five opponents in the Trojan Volleyball Classic and added a win over Alabama State for a 6-0 start. A trip to the Mississippi University for Women tournament proved just as productive as the Trojans went undefeated and knocked off their hosts for the tournament title. A win at Huntingdon College gave Troy a 12-0 record and its best start in program history.
Wins over Barry, Jacksonville State and the College of Charleston gave the Trojans a 15-0 mark before they suffered their first setback of the season, a 3-0 loss at the hands of Florida Southern. Troy rebounded in its next match to defeat JSU and claim its third tourney title of the season.
Troy continued its winning ways with another road trip, this time to the West Georgia Invitational. Three more victories gave the Trojans their fourth regular season tournament crown.
The Trojans went through its roughest stretch of the season from Oct. 26 to Nov. 6 where they dropped five matches, including two at the GSC Pre-Conference Tournament. With a 10-3 record against conference opponents, Troy earned the top seed for the second straight season and left no doubt as to whom the best team in the league was.
In the first round of the Gulf South Tournament, Troy defeated Mississippi College, 15-4, 15-10, 15-6, before needing four games to get past a pesky West Georgia team, 13-15, 15-13, 15-3, 15-7. Jacksonville State came calling in the semifinals and hardly challenged the Trojans after game one. Troy advanced to the championship match with a 15-12, 15-2, 15-6 victory.
After JSU got past West Alabama, it was a rematch of double proportions. For the second straight year, the two arch rivals would meet for the GSC Championship on the line. For the second straight day, Troy and JSU would do battle. And for the second straight day, Troy would prevail - albeit not as easily as the day before. The Gamecocks took the first game, 16-14, but the Trojans responded by taking games two and three before dropping game four to set up a winner-take-all game five.
During the season Troy swept its opponent 14 times and was extended to five sets just five times in 39 matches, going 4-1 in those matches.
Junior Susan Hayden, senior Jody Pierce and senior Heather Whitworth were all named to the All-GSC regular season team, while Pierce and Whitworth both claimed spots on the all-tournament team.
