BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Leanna Johnson earned her seventh shutout win of the season as the Trojans downed Samford, 1-0, Wednesday at the Samford Softball Field.
Â
Johnson (11-3) retired the first 11 batters of the game in route to her seventh shutout win of the season moving her into eighth in Troy's (17-6) single-season shutout record and matching her freshman year total.
Â
The only run of the ball game came in the top of the second inning. Meagan Patterson led off with a double to right field and came around to score off Mia Jenkin's sacrifice fly.
Â
The Bulldogs (9-16) found their first base runner of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to Timberlyn Shurbutt's double to right center but left her stranded at second.
Â
Samford threatened again in the bottom of the sixth when Maddie Dorsett tried for the in-the-park home run but was thrown out at the dish.
Â
Emily Barnett (2-2) suffered the loss for the Bulldogs allowing one run, three hits and five walks.
Â
Quotable- Head Coach Beth Mullins
"I think that during this time of year, you have to find different ways to win ball games. Leanna threw a heck of a game and one run was all we needed! I am excited to get out and have a solid team practice tomorrow before we get back into conference play this weekend."
