CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Elisabeth Preus fired a 1-under 71 in Monday's second round of the Islander Classic to vault into a tie for second place overall at the Corpus Christi Country Club. Troy is in fifth place overall and just 12 shots off the pace.
"Today was pretty tough day," head coach Randy Keck said. "The weather in Corpus Christi was really difficult as the wind blew about 15-30 MPH off and on. It was a little different golf than we we're used to. It was pretty firm and pretty fast; they've had no rain and the golf course played pretty hard and fast. Hopefully we come out and battle back tomorrow and have a chance to win."
Preus entered the second round tied for 27th place after a 6-over first round, but responded with five birdies, including one on her final hole to push her card into the red. She is tied for third overall in the field with seven birdies and is tied for third with a 2-over cumulative score on the par 4 holes. It was the freshman's third under-par round of the season.
Nicole Lorup is a shot back of Preus in a tie for seventh place at 6-over through two rounds after cards of 72 and 78 Monday. She carded three birdies during the opening circuit but failed to go under par on a hole in the afternoon flight.
Troy shaved six shots off its opening round score to climb three spots into fifth place overall. The Trojans are just 12 shots back of Sam Houston State and Houston Baptist for what would be their third title of the year. Troy made its money Monday on the par 5 holes with a combined 4-under par but struggled on the par 3 holes with a combined 26-over par.
ShaeLee Scarberry and Ainsley Cowart are tied for 27th place at 12-over par after two rounds. Scarberry finished with four birdies over her two rounds, while Cowart, who is competing as an individual, carded three birdies.
Anna Claire Little sits at 15-over par and is tied for 41st place following Monday's play, which featured three birdies, and Judith Castro is in 44th place a shot back of Little after picking up one birdie. Troy's other individual competitor, Brooklyn Bostick is tied for 54th place following rounds of 79 and 85 with a pair of birdies.
Troy hits the course Tuesday along with Incarnate Word and Southern Illinois for the 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
