Troy Rolls Past Georgia Southern for Sixth-Straight Win

STATESBORO, Ga. – Troy secured its sixth consecutive victory with a series-opening sweep over Georgia Southern Thursday morning in Hanner Fieldhouse. Caitlin Cooper posted nine kills on .467 hitting as the Trojans downed the Eagles, 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 25-22).
The Trojans (10-4, 10-4 SBC) have now tied the school record for most conference wins in a season and have won six-straight matches, tied for the fourth-longest win streak in the program's Division I era (1993).
Freshman Tori Hester finished one dig shy of her third double-double of the year with a team-high 11 kills and nine digs. Cheyenne Hayes impressed in her return to the front row with eight kills on .294 hitting, five digs and two aces.
Amara Anderson posted 33 assists, good for a 11.0 assists/set average, to go along with seven digs and four kills on eight attempts with no errors (.500).
Troy turned in a solid defensive performance as it held Georgia Southern (2-9, 2-9 SBC) to .069 hitting on the match. Lacey Jeffcoat once again led the Trojans defensively with 14 digs. Julia Brooks turned in a team-high three total blocks while Anderson and Halston Hillier each posted two.
Set One
The two sides split the first eight points of the match before Troy went on a 4-0 run aided by kills from Hayes and Brooks to take an 8-4 lead. Hester's first kill of the match extended Troy's lead to five at 10-5 to force the first Eagle timeout of the match. Georgia Southern cut the Troy lead to two at 11-9, before the Trojans extended their lead to six at 16-10. A sneaky dump attack from Anderson highlighted a 7-0 Troy run to close out the set as the Trojans took set one, 25-13.
Set Two
Troy started slow in set two and was forced to use an early timeout when the Eagles gained a four-point advantage at 7-3. A Hayes ace eventually brought the Trojans back to within one at 9-8, but Georgia Southern extended it back to four at 13-9. The Eagles gained their largest lead of the set to force the final Troy timeout of the set at 19-13. Back-to-back kills from Hester forced the Eagles to take a timeout at 20-17 before back-to-back solo blocks from Cooper cut the deficit to one at 20-19. A Natalie Hummel ace evened the match at 20-20 and a Georgia Southern attack error gave Troy its first lead of the set at 21-20. The Trojans completed the second-set comeback with a 25-22 victory in set two.
Set Three
The Trojans got off to a better start in set three after a kill from Brooks put Troy in front by five at 9-4 to force a quick Eagle timeout. Out of the timeout, Georgia Southern cut the Trojan advantage to one at 10-9. The squads still found themselves in a tight race at 15-14 before a block from Hillier and Brooks gave Troy a three-point lead at 17-14. Troy led by as many as six at 20-14 before the Eagles used a 3-0 run to pull within 20-17 and force a Troy timeout. Georgia Southern fought off four Trojan match points, but Hester's eleventh kill of the match eventually clinched the series-opening sweep with a 25-22 win in set three.

- Troy has now tied the school record for most conference wins in a season. The Trojans also won 10 league matches in 2012 and 2019.
- The Trojans have now won six consecutive matches which ties for the fourth-longest win streak in the program's Division I history.
- Troy is now 5-11 all time against Georgia Southern. The win marks the Trojans' second-ever road win against the Eagles.
- With eight kills today, Cheyenne Hayes passed Haven Triboulet to move into sixth place on Troy's all-time kills list with 1,294 career kills.
